President Adam Manning welcomed everyone to the Centerville Rotary Club and led reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. PDG Harvey Smith provided the prayer, including a special prayer for Boyd Preston who is having heart surgery on Friday.
This being the first meeting of month, Lee Hieronymus, Don Stewart, Brad Thorp, and Ron Bowersocks led the singing of God Bless America.

President Manning thanked Uriah Anderson & Jim Stuart for being greeters today and introduced today’s guests: Erik Collins, from the Dayton Rotary Club and Pat Turnbull, prospective member.
Kelly McDonald spoke of President Manning’s goal to reinvigorate our quarterly service projects, one of the main purposes of our club. We have scheduled four projects at end of September/early October.
Rotary International has 5 Avenues of Service: Club, Vocational, Community, International, & New Generations.
And Rotary also has 7 areas of Focus:
Promoting Peace
Fighting Disease
Providing Clean Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
Saving Mothers and Children
Supporting Education

Today’s announcements:
- Pancake committee met today - signup sheets available now for work shifts for the October 28 fundraiser.
- Oct 24 is World polio Day; District 6670 invites all to Pints to End Polio on Friday, Oct 6, 5-8:30 pm at Southern Ohio Brewing on Factory Road in Beavercreek.
- Sofie Ameloot announced we are taking inventory of who has Pancake yard signs to reuse. Watch for email from Ron Hollenbeck.
- Uriah Anderson reminded to let him know if you want to be invoiced for pancake tickets and to pick up your tickets if you haven’t yet.
- Washington-Centerville Public Library sent a nice thank you for the Club’s donation to The Wall that Heals.
- Rand Oliver announced the CPR training will be on October 3 or 5, at 6 pm at Fire Headquarters on McEwen Rd. There’s still time to sign up.
- Kristin Hutton reminded we need all to help secure sponsorships for Pancake Day. If you don’t feel comfortable asking, just send her the names and she’ll contact. Think of anyone who has done service for you.
Happy Bucks this quarter are going toward Hannah’s Treasure Chest for Operation Warm, providing winter coats to children in need. Our Sergeant at Arms today was Jim Stuart.
So far we have raised $6,832 dollars and need just $3,068 more to meet our goal.
Happy Bucks were generously given for:
- Erich Eggers missed a few meetings as he was in Savannah, GA watching the Savannah Banana, including a pitcher who was on 8 ft high stilts!
- Raj Grandhi was happy the grandkids are in town.
- Lee Hieronymus gave $50 this week so Harvey owes $100.
- Matt Kuhn was happy.
- Harvey Smith announced he still challenges Lee to $500. Erich Eggers then offered $1,000 if someone matched that and Harvey said, “Done!”
- Elda Gotos Gay then matched Erich and Harvey’s generosity! That’s $3,000 which is most of our goal! THANK YOU for your generosity!
- Rand Oliver is back from Key West, but leaving for Greenland.
- Wayne Davis was thinking of Boyd.
- Bill Menker had to leave early, but reminded all that as COVID number are on the rise, the library is still offering free COVID tests.
- Pat Turnbull for his coworkers at the table.
- Ron Hollenbeck gave for 4 coats, and (tongue in cheek) apologized for trying to choke Boyd :-)

Our speaker today was District Governor, Doug Buchy.
DG Doug Buchy is a grad of University of Cincinnati and the Naval Officers Candidate School in Newport, RI, and served in Desert Storm. He was a member of the Dayton Club, and now the Springboro Club. His father is also a member of Dayton Rotary Club.
Doug noted he was our Assistant Governor once, but never heard us sing as well as we did today. He noted Centerville is a unique club - probably the best club in the district because of our $1 per capita giving every year. We have lots of distinguish members - Past District Governors Sivaji Subramaniam & Harvey Smith, District Treasurer, Don Stewart, and former Assistant Governors Boyd Preston & Carol Kennard.
He thanked our club for stepping up when he was looking for Assistant Governors - Ron Hollenbeck, Chuck King, and Frank Perez stepped up and are current Assistant Governors.
There are 46 clubs in our district. When talking to other clubs, Doug says he talks about Springboro, Dayton, & Centerville clubs as examples of the best clubs in the district. Although we are a great club, he noted these areas where we can strive to be even better:
- 25% females in our club. Rotary’s goal is 31%.
- Springboro does 10 service projects per year. Glad to see we’re implementing more service projects again.
- We’re an old club - only have 17 under age 50; average age is 67-68. Springboro average is 45.
Doug encouraged us to recruit more younger members and more female members.
Doug noted, “It’s not my father’s Rotary any more.”
A little Rotary history: In 1905, Paul Harris wanted to learn more about other’s businesses, so he started meeting weekly in Chicago, rotating to each other’s business each week (hence the name Rotary.) Some of the oldest clubs are in our district: #17 Cincinnati, #47 Dayton.
1913 Cincinnati hosted the first International Convention, just a few months after the Dayton flood. John Patterson bussed people to see the devastation and Rotary saw the need and donated some money, to help rebuild Dayton.
1917 Arch C. Klumpf started the Rotary Foundation and $26.50 for a project in Kansas City was the first donation.
1979, Rotarians went to the Philippines and started Polio vaccinations, which then spread to worldwide.
1982 the End Polio Now campaign was started. Just Afghanistan and Pakistan have active polio cases now. Almost $4 billion have been given by Rotary, including the Bill & Melinda Gates donation.
1986-87 women admitted in the US after a court battle.
1989 codified for all Rotary clubs worldwide to allow women.
2020 COVID stopped everyone from meeting. Clubs started meeting on Zoom. Biggest change ever for Rotary.
Doug noted when Hans Berkel (later DG and Centerville Rotarian) was president of the Dayton club and Doug was a committee chair, Hans asked him to leave the Dayton club to help save the Springboro club. There were 13 members then. Doug was president of the Springboro Club when Hans was District Governor and that year grew to 17 members. They now have 40 members, with 50% women.
Rotary has also changed since his father’s day in the dress code - no tie/jacket required now and there is a more relaxed atmosphere. Doug encouraged us to think outside of the box - we’re here to go and do.
The RI theme this year is Create Hope in the World. There is no longer different focus each year based on the new president, but continuity is the theme now with goals carrying forward year to year. R. Gordon McInally added one new goal this year on mental health. He stresses to first and foremost take care of Rotarians. Speak up and take care of community. Don’t be afraid of asking for help.
