- Carol Kennard announced the Publicity Committee is looking for more members to help promote the good work of our club. The committee will meet next Thursday, Aug 17, 11 am at Yankee Trace, just before the Club meeting. Please attend and find out how you can help.
- Brad Huffman shared our new Exchange Student, Martina’s plane was delayed and now will arrive Friday at 11:10 am at Dayton Airport. Bill Menker made a welcome sign at the Makerspace, and all Rotarians signed it.
- Kelly McDonald needs a head count for the Wednesday, August 30 social from 5:30-7 pm at Sueno, 607 East 3rd Street, Dayton. We will also be collecting used cell phones, charging blocks and cables to donate to Artemis Center who recycles them and gives to women in need. Will even take non-working phones. Sueno has authentic Mexican cuisine.

- Rand Oliver noted 14 Rotarians signed up for the CPR class. Rand is getting a final count and will then schedule a date for the class. We will have our own class since there is so much interest.
Happy Bucks this quarter are going toward Hannah’s Treasure Chest for Operation Warm, providing winter coats to children in need. Sergeant of Arms today was Pat Beckel, with help from Brian Hayes.
Rotarian Chuck King won some very hard to find bottles of bourbon and he has generously donated them to be raffled off to support Operation Warm. The first bottle raffled off was a W.L. Weller (original wheated bourbon) which sold for $200 donation to Operation Warm from Kelly McDonald. Thanks for your generosity, Kelly!

- Sofie Ameloot said her daughter’s operation went well and she’s now walking on crutches, and gave thanks for the Tour de Gem support!
- Brad Huffman completed his 3rd vacation, this time to the Cayman Islands for work. He has 2 kids leaving for college in the next two weeks.
- Lisa Goris May is happy to be back after being sick. Andrea got to see Billy Joel & Stevie Nicks but now has COVID. Lisa prepared 20 casseroles for Casseroles for Hope thanks to donations from the club. She joined, so now every quarter she will make casseroles for the program. She encouraged others to JOIN!
- Don Stewart had a great vacation with his wife’s family in WV - had great weather and lots of fun.
- Dale Berry has no money but was happy to have been in Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut in the last week.
- Ron Hollenbeck gave money he took out of Dale’s wallet :-)
- Bob Fry was happy to be here.
- Ray Merz took a test that shows he’s 6 years younger than his actual age. Congrats!
- Jim Harris for Operation Warm.
- Chuck King gave double payment as he will be visiting the Ford Museum and other sites in Michigan next week. Chuck also told Pat that when he was 16, he asked his father for a car, but his father just bought him a new pair of shoes!
- Kelly McDonald was wearing an RI District 5000 shirt today in support of those suffering from the Hawaii wildfires. He said the District Governor picks the print for each year’s shirt. He’s collecting funds for a Rotary club’s non-profit who’s working to help with rebuilding. He’s sending $500 and will match what others donate.
- Jessie Campbell missed a few weeks, and was grateful Pat Beckel called to make sure he was not dead! He’s been busy converting an old house.
- Kristin Hutton said her son started saying “Mama”!
- Harvey Smith gave for a coat.
- Elda Gotos Gay announced her 5th grandchild is on the way. This time a boy after 4 girls!
- Dan Johnson just returned from a great family vacation to the Pacific Northwest.
- Uriah Anderson announced Sunday is the FREE Cruise in to the Ice Cream Social at RecPlex. Staff will also be painting rocks for the rock snake challenge going on between parks & rec agencies across the state. Stop by to paint a rock and help them build the longest and most favorite rock snake, as voted for on Facebook.
- Mary Nenninger donated for a sleeve, noting she also joined Casserole for Hope.
- Mike Weir for Operation Warm.
- Amy Hary gave thanks for the beautiful banner Bill made for our exchange student.
- Carol Kennard enjoyed her first week of retirement but was still incredibly busy!
- Gina Smith announced her parents are thinking about joining after their visit last week since everyone was so nice and welcoming.
- Pat Beckel also encouraged all to go to Stubbs Park on Friday for Party in the Park and Dave Matthews tribute band. Lots of free activities for the kids and many food trucks.
Our speaker today was Nicole Sturk with SICSA Pet Adoption and Wellness Center.
Nicole is a 3rd generation Daytonian, Wright State Alumni with 15 years of marketing experience with non-profits, who was named a top 25 Impact Women in Business and is a Dayton Rotarian.
Nicole started by asking a few questions:
How long has SICSA been around? Next year will be their 50th anniversary!
Who do they primarily support? People!
Who can name an event SICSA has held? Lift Your Leg.
SICSA is a non-profit organization that was founded by four women and was located in a garage initially. On February 7, 2020, they opened the new building on Washington Village Drive where they are now. They have a contract with Centerville, Washington Township, and Kettering to capture, neuter, and release stray cats.
SICSA provides resources for free or low cost or whatever people can pay. They recently gave grants to help 12 shelters across America to set up programs.
SICSA Help Center and Safe Pets Program - provides pet food assistance and supplies, temporary foster care for pets whose owners are in crisis, pet behavior support, financial assistance for veterinary care, and assistance with pet deposits. Short-term in-foster home to cover all animal needs free of charge for however long needed. The average length of foster home is two months, and costs $500 per pet. SICSA served 72 animals last year. About 87% were reunited with their owner; others went to new homes.
Guardian Angel Fund - cats & dogs with special needs receive the care and attention they need before finding a home. They are a no kill facility (unless serious medical issue with no chance of survival.) Nicole shared a couple of success stories.
They can do bloodwork in their lab to figure out what is going on and also subsidize costs if a special needs pet is adopted. Nicole said an abandoned or mistreated pet doesn’t mean the dog wasn’t loved - there could be extenuating circumstances where the owner couldn’t take care properly.
Veterinary Care Clinic - go to neighborhoods and set up a mobile clinic. They work with community advocates to identify neighborhoods in the region that are considered to be most in need. The mobile clinic provided low cost veterinary care - vaccines, flea treatment, etc. SICSA does 5 per year. Sinclair Vet Tech and OSU students have been working alongside their veterinarians.
