Centerville Rotary Meeting Highlights

President Adam Manning welcomed everyone to the Centerville Rotary Club and led reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Manning’s announcements:
Board Meeting last Monday at the Woodbourne Library – Tyler’s application (scholarship) was approved unanimously.
Pancake Breakfast
  • Will be held next Saturday, Oct 28, 7 am to 12 noon at Centerville High School West Commons.
  • Opportunities to volunteer for the event are still available; sign up is still open.
  • For those who wish to be billed quarterly for Pancake Breakfast tickets, let Brian know. (This is for 2024 Pancake Breakfast; NOT for the current year.)
Dick Hoback has been experiencing trouble with his back. He is in terrible pain. Keep him in your thoughts.
Pick up new pin (near badges) – two types available – traditional pin backing and magnetic backing (should not be used if you have a pace maker).
Happy birthday wishes to Elda Gotos Gay for her Oct. 19 birthday.
 
Happy Bucks this quarter are going toward the Maui Fire/Disaster Relief fund.
Generous Rotarians gave donations to help with the Maui fire disaster relief.
 
 
Our speaker this week was John Carroll, Coordinating Principal of Centerville High School.
John Carroll began his career as a Mathematics Teacher at Centerville High School where he also coached football, chess, and science olympiad. He served as the CHS South Unit principal before transitioning to the role of Curriculum Coordinator and then as Coordinating Principal at CHS. He has worked for Centerville City Schools since 1993.
 
John shared information about Centerville High School.
  • Centerville H.S. serves over 2,700 students from 9 – 12 + grade. Students with special needs benefit from services up until the age of 22.
  • Centerville H.S. was voted one of the 2023 Best Communities for Music and Education. It has a strong legacy in sports, but excels in other areas as well.
  • The schools Strategic Plan, Portrait of an Elk, was developed by a committee, consisting of educators, students and civic leaders. The committee determined the core principles for the school are:
    • Adaptability
    • Communication
    • Critical Thinking
    • Empathy
    • Tech Literacy
  • The core principles the students felt most strongly about and advocated for was Empathy.
  • Portrait of an Elk starts with self, evolves into group projects and then school / community events.
  • There are three programs to support students:
    • Elk Connectors
      • Senior Elk Connectors work as peer mentors for freshmen.
    • HOPE Squad
      • Positive school culture and suicide prevention.
    • Counseling Services
      • Providing intervention and counseling for students.
 
Although there are so many negative stories about youths, Centerville is producing positive results with its many teams and clubs and not just sports. The teams and clubs are making being highly regarded for best communities, awards, making it to finals in competition. Some events, clubs, activities are:
  • The seniors just raised $84,000 last week for Spirit Chain.
  • Mock trails
  • Band – made finals last year
  • Career tech, health and art programs, gymnastics – highly rated nationally
  • Centerville H.S. was on the Today Show for best school spirit.
President Manning thanked John Carroll for sharing the information and wished all a good week.
 
Next week our program will be Pancake Co-Chairs Adam Manning and Sofie Ameloot with final preparation for our big fundraiser!
 
Save the date: The annual Christmas Party will be on Thursday, December 14, 6:30-8:30 pm. More details to follow.
