President, Uriah Anderson welcomed everyone to the Centerville Rotary Club and led the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. Bishop Brian Hayes provided the prayer and Brad Thorp led singing of God Bless America.
This is Rotary Foundation Month - The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary International, it taps into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money, and expertise into Rotary’s priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace.

Happy Bucks this quarter will go to the Fairy Godmother Foundation.

Happy Bucks were generously given for:
- Pat B was happy the election and political ads are over and encouraged everyone to be good to each other.
- Carol K was happy.
- Kristin H shared that Colin’s Lodge in Bellbrook, a place for adults with disabilities to enjoy various activities in a supportive environment, is looking for volunteers. Reach out to Kristin if you’d like to know more.
- Susan S was happy.
- Sofie A for today’s guests, and was relieved nothing bad happened to Noë, as she feared when she pinged her awake early this morning. Noë was just trying to reach them about a car repair.
- Tom A was happy the yard signs are gone.
- Lee H’s Farm Report this week was about how the Butler County Fair was considering dropping the dairy portion due to lack of entries. But then the owner of a local farm opened a creamery and started offering events such as Yoga with Cows, Read to a Calf, Xmas with Cows. She then started Hands, Hoofs, and Hearts program for kids who agree to care for a calf and then show at the Fair. The program saved the dairy portion of the Fair.
- Elda GG thought Harvey should read to the calves and was happy to see Peter.
- Mark M was happy to be Uriah’s guest, to hear Vince, and congratulated Uriah for being receiving the Township Association Award of Excellence by the Ohio Township Association. Congrats, Uriah!
- Uriah A had a great trip to Burlington, VT, where they ate and drank everything (especially the cheese!)
- Gary H for the nice weather, was happy to be here, and the Bourbon and Bubbles event tomorrow night.
- Ron H was just happy.
- Rand O was here 2 weeks in a row, joked about creameries, and noted he is looking forward to the peaceful transition of power in our country.
- Mark F was just happy.
- Chuck K was happy all his leaves are down from the trees and at the curb, ready to be picked up.
- Brad T was thinking about the Farm Report and the patience he exhibits when listening to it. He shared that while he and Chris lived in Summerville, SC, he worked as a disc jockey at WKHJ in Holly Hills, SC, and his first responsibility every morning was to do the Farm Report!
- Socks for his wife’s birthday.
- Boyd P thanked Harvey & Elda for representing the club at the Butler County Fair :-)
- Mark K is slowly getting his voice back, for today’s guests, and football this weekend.

Our speaker today was our own, Vince Carone, professional powerlifter.
Vince noted he came from a large Italian family, and shared photos of his family and his rescue dog, Drax.
Powerlifting consists of Squat, Bench, and Deadlift. The best of 3 tries added up gives the lifter’s score. He has been lifting for the last 17 years. In 2010, he made world rankings at his first competition (#54). By 2025, he had risen to #2 in the world.
Vince attributes his success to a new coach, who helped him learn different form.
He scored: Squat-535, Bench-430, Deadlift-525 = 1490 in his first meet at age 20. At his most recent meet, he scored: Squat-821, Bench-501, Deadlift-738 = 2,060.
In 2018, he competed in his first pro level in Columbus, and did a deadlift of 710. To qualify for the world competition, WPO Pro, the top 30 in the world are invited. And he was invited this year.
Vince completed a 821 squat at the pro level, where there are spotlights, announcers, YouTube streaming. It’s a big deal! Twenty-three successfully completed the meet. He ranked 10th overall, 6th in men, and 2nd in his weight class.
Swanson’s Gym is where he trains.
Vince has a B.S. in Exercise Science, and works in physical therapy at Your Neighbor Physical Therapy. He works strength training into his client’s therapy. It helps in training your neuromuscular system for both physical and mental health.
Power
Strength = force
Power = force x speed
As you age, muscle fibers and neuro connections decline. Power exercises help delay that decline.
Sarcopenia - commonly associated with aging, and accelerates after age 60.
Vince recommends to keep moving, keep strong, keep active to reduce risk of falls. It has been proven that those with a better grip and quad strength have a lower mortality rate.
He recommends slight, steady use of the weights. 2-3 sessions/week. Consume 25-35 grams of protein per meal - lean meats, eggs, fish, high quality plant-based protein like beans and tofu, and have adequate magnesium.
It is never too late to build strength; the body is very adaptive.
The Dinner Project program - TMJ, problems breathing, and others are a result of a forward head posture. This project is to help set children up for physical success:
- Sit up tall
- Chew with mouth closed
- Breathe through nose
Vince started working out in his basement in 5th grade and all through HS. Got back into it after college at a friend’s request.
Lifters have to set an opener level at competitions. They have to make that weight or higher, can never go lower. So they do a weight they know they can get and go up from there.
Vice has seen an 85 year old do a deadlift at a competition and it’s not uncommon to see over 60 year old lifters.
The youngest he’s seen is a 10 year old girl deadlifting 3x her body weight. He wouldn’t recommend lifting that much when that young and bones are still growing, but learning good form is beneficial.
Vince stressed the importance of staying active and lifting weights as you age. At a minimum, start by getting up from a chair without using your hands, then increase the numbers of times, and then hold something when you get up for a bigger challenge.
Vince said his favorite is deadlift, which has kept him in top 5 in the country.
You can watch Vince do a lift
HERE.
President Anderson thanked our speaker, led the 4-Way Test, and wished all a good week.
We received word this week than Mae Berkel-Ave' recently passed away. Mae and her husband, Hans were members of our club from 2008 to 2013, and Hans served as District Governor 2009-10. RIP Mae.
