Centerville Rotary Club Meeting April 5, 2018

The GREETERS:

04/05/2018  John Beals and Mark Febus
04/12/2018  Dick Hoback and Jim Harris
04/19/2018  Jack Durnbaugh and Ray Merz
04/26/2018  Deb Dulaney and Arnie Biondo

Mark Febus and John Beals were today's official greeters. Ron Hollenbeck stepped in for a short time before John Beals showed up. Here's Mark, waiting for the first person to greet, and it's none other than....

our past-president Ron Hollenbeck.

Before either of them arrived the motley crew seen below appeared. Carol Kennard introduces
our guests this day, and Chuck King, our vice president, helped with the set-up of equipment, and our club president Peachy Metzner, and president-elect Boyd Preston were all helping out.

These signs were to help advertise the upcoming levey, Issue 16, on the May 8 ballot.

Carol Kennard has on a sweater she will talk about during Happy Bucks. It' not one of a kind.
Or one in 18,000.

Our speaker Bob Daley is seen here with Carol Kennard. He is know for his vast community service and among other things, he was a newspaper man in the past.

Jim Harris is hurrying to get everything ready for the meeting.

Here Jim has just located the banner to be hung.

Mark Febus (R) is shown here greeting our two speakers, Bob Daley and Mark Metzger (L).

Eric Beach and Dale Berry are seen coming in.

Dale looks like he's getting ready to box, but I bet he isn't. And there's Ron, subbing for John Beals, our other greeter.

But here comes the real John Beals, and official greeter meets official greeter.

Looks like Frank Perez coming in, with Joyce Young not far behind.

And Tom Broadwell and Brian Hayes have hung up coats and are coming in.

And Kim Senft-Paras is scurrying by. Librarian on the run.

Brian Hayes gets a hand from Mark before John gets his turn.

And here's John and Brian....no showman on the Hover Board here this week.

And John and Joyce, as the action moves on.

Jim Briggs stops to talk with John.

And our two official greeters pause for a picture together.

Almost looks like The Last Supper, but we hope not...

Rebecca Quinones is smiling here, but she brought along sad news to tell during the
Happy Bucks time.

A view from the back of the room.

And Kisha Taylor arrives with her daughter August Taylor, a 10th grader at Bellbrook High School.

Bob Fry, Kim Senft-Paras, and Ron Hollenbeck

And Carol Kennard with Mark Metzger, director of the Washington Twp. Rec Center.

And John Beals greets Ray Merz, one of our retired ministers.

And Erich Eggers, our Sgt.-at-Arms, is greeted royally.

And here's our president talking with the greeters before the meeting.

And Brad Huffman has survived being away with five kids at Disney World.

Did we say that Al Scott from the Miamisburg Rotary was here? And that he brought the club a gift?
Well he was and he did.
And

And the camera kept clicking....
Fortunately it caught Harvey Smith along the way...as we learned he was honored by Normandy Church, where he was a minister before he retired and continues to serve in various capacities.

And Nancy Biondo happened to get in without being seen until introduced as his sister (wife) by Arnie Biondo.

The Centerville Rotary Club met at The Golf Club at Yankee Trace at noon. Club President Peachy Metzner led the Pledge of Allegiance; Harvey Smith gave the prayer; and Brad Thorp led the singing of God Bless America.

The guests at this week's meeting included:

Our guest speakers Bob Daley and Mark Metzger; Nancy Biondo, wife of member Arnie Biondo; Al Scott, from Miamisburg Rotary Club; and August Taylor, daughter of Kisha Taylor.  August is a tenth grader at Bellbrook High School.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Our president Peachy Metzner is seen below.

Sofie Ameloot noted that at the next meeting members will be asked to make some cards and put encouraging messages on them and drawings in crayon to go into the backpacks given out to children at the Dayton Food Bank. The messages cannot be religious. She said the paper and crayons will be available at the next meeting. Frank Perez had the supplies ready at the meeting this day, but there was no time for the activity.
Boyd Preston noted that he had a sign-up sheet for volunteers to sign up to help out at the Kennard Nature Nook park area and memorial site  on April 14 in the morning...9 to noon...

Peachy said at a previous meeting that three memorial bricks were being purchased for placement in the Memorial grove at Grant Park by the Kennard Nature Nook: one for Jack Workman, one for Rick Terhune, and one for John Laufersweiler. The brick laying will occur at the May 17th meeting at the Kennard Nature Nook, he said.

Peachy reminded everyone that the next board meeting will be Monday, April 16, at Park District Headquarters, 221 N. Main Street, across from Benham's Grove from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. All are welcome, especially new members.

The Rotary Leadership training is coming up for parts one and three on April 14. It will be held at the Greene County Career Center in Xenia. The club will pay for a member's training. Peachy said Boyd, John, Brian Hayes, and Frank Perez will be attending. He said it is an opportunity to learn more about Rotary and to meet members from other Rotary clubs.

The District Conference April 27/28 will be held in Springfield and the shampoo donations are for the hygiene kits, some of which will be brought back to the club for distribution to charity.
The conference will be held at the Hollenbeck Baylay Center. Instead of last year's basket presentations from each club, they want to do a district project and put together hygiene kits. Each club can then choose a charity to distribute the kits to.
Peachy said you can register on-line via e-mail. The event will be a fun-casual event with food trucks and tours of the Heritage Museum, etc. and a kids camp on Saturday.
The District Conference Golf Outing at Reid Park Golf Club begins at 8:30 a.m. April 27.

President Peachy noted that the Dayton Daily News had an article about club member Doug Bockrath and the Bockrath store history in today's paper. Doug was not at today's meeting though. Peachy passed around a copy of the story, and he wasn't pulling the rug out from under us. Doug was probably home, as snug as a bug in a rug....

Peachy also mentioned that the Kettering Rotary Club will be holding a benefit  for Multiple Sclerosis in honor of Andy Scholes from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 28 at Romer's Bar & Grill, with music and entertainment by Ryan Roth. There's a 50/50 raffle Romer's appetizers and a cash bar. Tickets are $20.

HAPPY BUCKS: The Happy Bucks this quarter go to help the Brunner Literacy Center, which tutors adults 19 and older in reading, writing, and math skills, etc.

Erich Eggers, our Sgt.-at-Arms, called for the Happy Bucks, collected by our club secretary Mark Balsan.

Erich introduced our guests, and when he came to Al Scott, of the Miamisburg Rotary, Al got up and presented the club with a blanket from the Freedom Alliance, which he said our club has generously supported over the years, noting that the Miami Valley Food Alliance has received more than $300,000 through everyone's efforts.

Phil Raynes and Brian Hayes gave donations saying they were Happy, and then someone got after Erich, who was gone all last week on vacation. Erich said he received an e-mail from Jeff Senney, who said he saw an article in the Dayton Business Journal with a picture of his son-in-law Mark Balsan. And it was noted that Mark didn't have his Rotary pin on. Erich and his wife own Remodeling Designs, which has a new show room. Mark was going to be fined, but Erich said he would pay Mark's $5 fine for not wearing his pin.
Rebecca Quinones said because of her husband's recent promotion to U.S. Air Force Colonel, they will be headed back to Washington D.C. next summer for a year. They hope to get transferred back the following year, she said, and are keeping the house. Rebecca was voted our Rotarian of the year for 2017, and has been totally involved in the club activities and with the Interact Club at CHS, and will be sorely missed when she leaves. Her daughter Sofia is also a mainstay at the Pancake Breakfast and we will be at a loss without her help there.
Eric Beach gave $5, noting he was happy to be back from traveling for his work.
Brad Huffman spent Spring Break with his five kids at Disney World...Whew!
Jim Harris gave with hope for improving weather...no more tornadoes, please.....Tuesday the sirens went off and people were warned as two tornadoes crossed our path and damaged the Beavercreek area. We got the high winds and downed trees, and flooding of Bellbrook streets and other areas.
Brian Bergmann gave for Brunner's Literacy Center and $4 for seeing Arnie at Krogers the other day.
Doc Hoback gave in the hope of not seeing snow again....which is predicted to still hang around for a while in flurries for the next few days. And true enough, it snowed enough to cover the grass and trees Friday night.

Lee Hieronymus is hoping to get out of wearing his flannel shirts one day soon, and enjoying Spring.
Harvey Smith gave, apologizing to anyone who objects to him injecting humor into his prayers now and then. He said he knows some may not appreciate it.
Al Scott said, "God does."
Arnie apologized for forgetting he was supposed to set up for the Rotary meeting. Others pitched in, as you saw above. Arnie noted that his wife Nancy, though not a member of the club, has helped him work with the youth exchange program and she did a bang up job when Saloni, our exchange student from India, was given a good-bye picnic at one of our parks before she headed for home. Lots of work behind the scenes, and we thank you so much. The Biondos have hosted several exchange students at their home.
Mike Wier gave, and Ray Merz gave, Ray stating that his father always said there would be three snows after Easter. We had one on Easter, and one is expected Friday (it came) and one Sunday, he said.
Ron Hollenbeck gave for Laurie's Uncle Clyde passing away.
And Kim Senft-Paras gave for all the good work by volunteers at Hannas Treasure Chest.
Carol Kennard gave for Penn State's championship win, and also for getting to visit family over Spring Break, her daughter and son and daughter-in-law and grandson, and then talked about going to a Billy Joel concert with more than 18,000 people in attendance and sitting down next to a lady wearing the exact same sweater she had on. In New York, mind you...But having traveled to NY long ago and wanting to bring home a souvenir clothing item from NY city, I bought a sweater, only to come home and find the same item at Elder Beerman's...Of course NY was where all the buyers went to get their items, so it does figure that we might match what NY-ers wear...only that one with her sweater on should be sitting next to her at the concert....that IS amazing...(Maybe there was a whole row of them sitting somewhere and she didn't notice).
Joyce Young gave to note that Rotary International is making good use of money donated to the Rotary Foundation. She said 800 cellphones were purchased and given to workers in Pakistan to help them find out who has not gotten a polio vaccine or who has polio.
Boyd gave to thank Sofie Ameloot for her work on getting the shampoos for the District Conference and to recognize our club member Harvey Smith who was named Pastor Emeritus for Normandy Church, which he retired from and yet continues to serve. He is someone who works very hard and follows the Rotary way of service above self. We all thank you Harvey.
Peachy gave, as he said he was on grandkid overload, having the grandkids all week long and having a little girl grandchild cling to him.
Brad Thorp gave for the Masters being played this week.

This Week's Speakers:  Mark Metzger, Director of the Washington Twp. Rec Center, and Bob Daley, co-chairman of the YES for REC Committee, which is supporting the Recreation Issue 16 1-mill Replacement Levy for a five-year term, on the May 8 ballot.

The levy replaces a .7-mill levy and will add $13.71/year for a $100,000 home value. The levy will generate $640,800 annually in additional revenue, bringing the total revenue to about $1.84 million in the first year.
The additional revenue will be used thusly:
$253,865 Maintain current level of services
$167,000 Provide senior programming (net cost)
$151,400 Make facility repairs and upgrades
$68,558 Pay back the general fund

Carol Kennard, retired Centerville-Washington Park District Director, who has now been serving as the director for the Clark County Park District in Springfield, introduced our speakers.

She said Mark, who had been Town Hall Theatre Manager for 20 years, is now the recreation facilities director for Washington Twp. Recreation Center.

Mark directs all recreation department programs, including sports, fitness, aquatics, summer camps, theatre, art and special events. Programs are offered for all ages and include the Rec West Enrichment Center for older adults.

Bob Daley is retired as the director of communications and publications for the Centerville-Washington Foundation, part of the Dayton Foundation. He served as president of the board of trustees for Hithergreen Center. Born in Cleveland, he moved to Dayton in 1947 when his father worked at Winters Bank. He graduated from UD and joined the U.S.Army, where he was assigned to a Nike Guided Missile Battery in the Anti-Aircraft Defense of New York City, then transferred to the 80th AAA Group as a Battery Commander.

He said he always wanted to be a journalist and started as a copy boy in the sports department at the Dayton Journal Herald while a Junior at UD. After getting out of the Army he rejoined the paper as a political reporter and later as a correspondent in Washington D.C. He returned to Dayton when offered a job as the director of public affairs and communications for the Kettering Foundation. He has been a member of the National Press Club for more than 50 years and still considers himself a journalist. He spent four years as the assistant to the governor John Gilligan beginning in 1970, then went to work as the media relations coordinator for the National League of Cities and was senior editor of its magazine, Nation’s Cities. He joined the staff of the Kettering Foundation after that, and then the Centerville-Washington Foundation, all part of the Dayton Foundation,

Bob and his wife Berneta Daley
